SKY’s Story

In the fall of 2009, a group of professionals were concerned that many children in the Copper Country’s three counties had needs that were not being met by any agency. Classroom teachers ended up providing the supplies and filling needs where possible — and still, many students had needs that were small and immediate.

The idea to create an organization to meet student needs took off!  Soon an enthusiastic group of 12 professionals representing school psychologists, classroom teachers, counselors, professionals from social services, mental health, the courts, and community members formed Simple Kindness for Youth (SKY). The group began fundraising with bake sales, pancake breakfasts, and other small events.

In 2010, SKY became a 501(c)3 nonprofit and started working with teachers and other educational professionals to award $50 grants to local students. SKY couldn’t meet the needs of our local youth without the professionals who see student needs and take the time and effort to submit grants. They are our “eyes and ears.”

Due to the amazing generosity of local individuals, businesses, and organizations, SKY is currently able to award grants of $150. Since 2010, we have awarded over $300,000 in grants to children from Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties!

Because our organization is all volunteer, we take great pride in the fact that we have been able to have 100% of donations go directly to meet student needs. The childrens’ thank you notes motivate us to continue our mission!
